9Chinese: Puzzles & Flash Cards for Learning Chinese (HSK) app for iPhone and iPad

9Chinese introduces a fun way of learning Chinese characters through solving puzzles. The puzzle design is inspired by JiuGong, which is a 3x3 grid system invented in ancient China for calligraphic practice.

The selection of Chinese characters is made according to the official HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, aka Chinese Proficiency Test) levels following the principles of being progressive and practical. Solving puzzles in 9Chinese is intuitive and can be done at any preferred pace; solved characters are added to the flash card library for further review and study. This app can be used in companion with the HSK study.

The inventor of JiuGong is Ouyang Xun, who is a Confucian scholar and calligrapher of the early Tang Dynasty. In the process of solving puzzles, the Gestalt properties of emergence and reification play an important role.
